The Crown
Christ the King of kings, Mary the Queen of Heaven, and the “crown of life” promised to the faithful (Revelation 2:10).
Christ the King. On his robe is written, “King of kings and Lord of lords” (Revelation 19:16). Christ the King and the Infant Jesus of Prague both wear the crown; the Infant holds the orb as well.
Mary, Queen of Heaven. The fifth Glorious Mystery of the Rosary is the Coronation of Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth. When the Child she holds is crowned too, as in Our Lady of Vailankanni, Our Lady of Victory and Our Lady of the Rosary, his crown is the reason for hers.
Crowning an image. Popes have long granted solemn crowns to images much loved by the faithful. In May, parishes crown Our Lady’s statue with flowers.
The martyrs. “Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life” (Revelation 2:10). Virgin martyrs such as St Philomena wear a crown of flowers.
