The Crescent Moon

“The moon under her feet” (Revelation 12:1): Mary above all that changes and passes, often crushing the serpent (Genesis 3:15).

In Revelation, the woman clothed with the sun stands “with the moon under her feet” (Revelation 12:1). In art the crescent moon beneath Our Lady shows her above all that waxes and wanes: the world, time and change.

The Immaculate Conception. Mary stands on the crescent moon, often on the globe, crushing the serpent. This recalls God’s words to the serpent in Eden: “I will put enmity between you and the woman … he shall bruise your head” (Genesis 3:15). The apple in the serpent’s mouth is the first sin, from which Mary was kept free.

Our Lady of Guadalupe. On St Juan Diego’s cloak (1531), Our Lady stands on a dark crescent moon held up by an angel.

Our Lady of Grace and the Assumption. Many images of Our Lady of Grace and of the Assumption set her on clouds above the moon.
