The Sacred Heart

Christ’s burning love for all people: the heart aflame, ringed with thorns and crowned with the cross.

The Heart of Jesus stands for his love, human and divine, for every person.

The image. The heart is shown aflame with love, ringed by the crown of thorns that sin gives it, marked by the wound of the soldier’s lance (John 19:34), with a cross rising from the flames and rays of light around it.

St Margaret Mary. Between 1673 and 1675 Christ appeared to St Margaret Mary Alacoque, a nun at Paray-le-Monial in France, and showed her his Heart: “Behold this Heart which has so loved men.” He asked for acts of reparation, Communion on the First Fridays, and a feast in honour of his Heart.

The feast. The Solemnity of the Sacred Heart is kept on a Friday in June, nineteen days after Pentecost. June is the month of the Sacred Heart.

In the home. Many families enthrone an image of the Sacred Heart in their home and consecrate themselves to him.

With Christ the King. Our Christ the King wears the Sacred Heart on his breast: he rules by love.

The Immaculate Heart. Mary’s heart is shown pierced by a sword, or ringed with roses and lilies: the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
