The Dragon
Satan and all evil, thrown down by St Michael and his angels (Revelation 12:7–9).
In Scripture the dragon is the devil himself: “the great dragon … that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan” (Revelation 12:9).
St Michael. Revelation tells of war in heaven, when Michael and his angels fought the dragon and threw him down to earth (Revelation 12:7–9). So St Michael is shown in armour with his wings spread, his foot on the dragon or on Satan, and his sword or spear raised.
St George. The soldier-martyr slaying the dragon, from a legend told in the Middle Ages, is faith overcoming evil.
St Margaret of Antioch. She is shown with a dragon at her feet; the legend says it swallowed her and burst when she made the sign of the cross.
Beneath a young saint. A dragon trampled underfoot, as in one of the St Aloysius designs, is victory over temptation and sin.
