St Aloysius Gonzaga
The young Jesuit in white surplice, holding the crucifix.
About this statue
St Aloysius Gonzaga, born in 1568 into the princely Gonzaga family of northern Italy, gave up his inheritance to join the Jesuits. He died in Rome in 1591, aged twenty-three, after caring for the victims of the plague. He is the patron of young people and students, and his feast falls on 21 June.
Ours shows him as a young Jesuit in white surplice over a black cassock, holding the crucifix. We also make him with his hand on his heart, with lilies for purity, or with a halo. The marble statue in the gallery below is the work of the Italian sculptor Ignazio Jacometti.
He is made for churches, chapels, schools and colleges named after him, and for Jesuit houses and student chaplaincies.
