St Francis of Assisi
Doves at his heart, the wolf and the lamb at his feet.
About this statue
St Francis of Assisi left a wealthy home to live in poverty, and from the brothers who joined him came the Friars Minor, the Poor Clares and the whole Franciscan family. Two years before his death in 1226 he received the wounds of Christ on Mount La Verna. He sang of Brother Sun and Sister Moon, preached to the birds and tamed the wolf of Gubbio, and he is the patron of animals and of care for creation. His feast falls on 4 October, when animals are brought to be blessed.
Ours holds two white doves to his heart, with the wolf and a lamb at his feet. We also make him gazing at the cross, with the wolf of Gubbio on a rock beside him, with cross, book and rosary, or embracing Christ on the cross.
He is made for churches, friaries, convents and schools of the Franciscan and Capuchin family, and for gardens and grottoes.
