St Matthew the Apostle
The tax collector Jesus called from his counting table, writing his Gospel with an angel at his side.
About this statue
Matthew, also called Levi, was a tax collector in Capernaum when Jesus said to him, “Follow me” (Matthew 9). The first Gospel is traditionally his. His feast falls on 21 September.
He rests a writing tablet against his knee, and the small angel at his side is the winged man that tradition gives to the Gospel of Matthew.
This is one of the twelve 11-foot apostles made for the facade of the Gunadala Matha Shrine, Vijayawada.
