St Bartholomew the Apostle
Tradition says he was flayed alive, and the knife is his sign.
About this statue
Bartholomew is usually taken to be the Nathanael whom Philip brought to Jesus, the man “in whom there is no deceit” (John 1). Tradition carries him to Armenia, where he was flayed alive. His feast falls on 24 August.
He holds up the knife of his martyrdom, in a long cloak and with a full beard.
This is one of the twelve 11-foot apostles made for the facade of the Gunadala Matha Shrine, Vijayawada.
