Roses

Love and the favours of heaven: the “shower of roses” St Thérèse promised, and Mary the Mystical Rose.

Roses stand for love and for the joy of heaven: a red rose for love even to martyrdom, a white rose for purity.

Mary, the Mystical Rose. The Litany of Loreto hails Our Lady as the Mystical Rose. The rosary takes its name from the Latin rosarium, a rose garden, each prayer offered to her like a flower.

At Lourdes. When Our Lady appeared to St Bernadette in 1858, a golden rose shone on each of her bare feet.

St Thérèse of Lisieux. Before she died in 1897, the young Carmelite promised, “After my death I will let fall a shower of roses.” She meant graces and favours from heaven, so she is shown holding roses and a crucifix.

St Rita of Cascia. As she lay dying in winter, Rita asked for a rose from her old garden, and a single rose was found blooming in the snow.

Our Lady of Guadalupe. In December 1531, roses blooming out of season on the hill of Tepeyac were the sign St Juan Diego carried to the bishop in his cloak.
