The Rosary
Prayer to Mary while meditating on the life of Christ; Our Lady carried it at Lourdes and asked for it daily at Fatima.
The rosary is a string of beads for prayer: five decades of ten Hail Marys, each opened by the Our Father and closed by the Glory Be, while one meditates on the mysteries of the life of Christ and his Mother.
Its name. Rosarium is Latin for a rose garden: each prayer is offered to Mary like a rose.
St Dominic. Tradition says Our Lady gave the rosary to St Dominic in the thirteenth century, and his Dominicans spread it across Europe. He is often shown receiving it from her.
Lourdes and Fatima. At Lourdes in 1858 Our Lady appeared with a rosary on her arm and passed its beads through her fingers as Bernadette prayed. At Fatima in 1917 she asked the three children to pray the rosary every day, and called herself the Lady of the Rosary.
Our Lady of Victory. The victory at Lepanto on 7 October 1571 was credited to the rosary prayed across Christendom. The day is now the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.
St Pio. Padre Pio called the rosary his weapon and was hardly ever seen without it.
